Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

We understand that finding the right support for your child or teen can bring up many questions.

At Creative Minds Music & Arts Therapy Centre, we want families to feel informed, comfortable and confident as they explore their therapy options.

Below, you will find answers to some of the most common questions about our music therapy, art therapy, play therapy and psychotherapy services, what to expect during sessions and how to get started.

If you have additional questions, our team in Whitby is always happy to help.

How do I know if my child needs therapy?

A child may need therapy if emotional, behavioral, or developmental challenges begin interfering with their daily life, schooling, or family relationships. Common signs include frequent emotional outbursts, persistent anxiety, sudden social withdrawal, difficulty regulating emotions, or difficulty processing life transitions. Children often express distress through behavior or physical complaints rather than words.

At Creative Minds Therapy in Whitby, we help families across Oshawa and the Durham Region determine if professional support is beneficial. A complimentary consultation can help clarify your child’s needs and identify the right creative approach.

What is music therapy and how can it help my child?

Music therapy is an evidence-based health profession that uses musical interaction to support a child’s emotional regulation, communication, social engagement, and cognitive growth. Children do not need to play an instrument, read music, or have any particular musical skill to participate. Through simple instrument exploration, singing, and movement, children process feelings and build life skills without the pressure of traditional talk therapy.

At Creative Minds Therapy, our qualified therapists customize sessions to help children express themselves, reduce anxiety, and improve focus. We proudly serve families from Whitby, Oshawa, and surrounding Durham Region communities looking for engaging, non-verbal therapeutic approaches.

What is the difference between art therapy, play therapy, and music therapy?

The key difference lies in the specific clinical activities used to achieve developmental and mental health goals.

Music therapy uses active songwriting, rhythmic entertainment, and accessible instrument play to target emotional regulation, speech development, and motor coordination.

Art therapy uses structured creation—such as clay modeling, painting, and collage work—to help children externalize anxiety, develop impulse control, and improve fine motor skills.

Play therapy utilizes games, role-play, and symbolic toys to process trauma, build social skills, and resolve behavioral challenges. Children do not need artistic or musical talent to benefit, as the focus is entirely on therapeutic growth rather than performance.

At Creative Minds Therapy, we evaluate each child’s unique needs to recommend the modality best suited for them (or if more than one is beneficial).

Can music therapy, art therapy, or play therapy help children with autism or ADHD?

Yes, creative therapies are highly effective for autistic and neurodivergent children, as well as children diagnosed with ADHD.

Because these therapies rely on active creation rather than traditional verbal processing or technical skill, they offer accessible pathways for non-verbal communication, sensory integration, focus, and impulse control.

For neurodivergent youth in Whitby and Durham Region, creative therapies foster self-advocacy, reduce sensory overload, and celebrate personal expression in an environment adapted to their individual learning styles and needs.

Is children's therapy covered by insurance in Ontario?

Children’s creative therapies—including music therapy, art therapy, and play therapy—are often fully or partially covered by extended health insurance plans in Ontario, depending on your individual plan details.

At Creative Minds Therapy, our care is provided by Registered Psychotherapists (RP), Registered Psychotherapists (Qualifying), or student interns working under direct RP supervision—all of which typically qualify for coverage under private health plans offering psychotherapy benefits. While OHIP does not cover private therapy, we provide detailed receipts for insurance reimbursement to support families across Whitby, Oshawa, and the Durham Region. We recommend checking directly with your insurance provider or company benefits department to confirm your specific coverage details.

What happens during my child's first therapy session?

Your child’s first therapy session focuses on building trust, establishing comfort, and completing an initial assessment in a welcoming, low-pressure environment. Parents are invited to join the session until their child feels comfortable, providing an ideal opportunity to speak directly with the therapist about your goals and concerns.

For safety and support, we ask that a parent or caregiver remain on site at Creative Minds Therapy for the duration of the visit when your child is in session. The therapist introduces age-appropriate instruments, art materials, or play options to help your child feel safe, understood, and excited to return.

How does therapy work at Creative Minds?

The therapeutic process begins with an intake assessment period, followed by collaborative goal setting and ongoing evaluation.

Our registered therapists formulate a personalized treatment plan tailored specifically to each client’s goals, needs, and strengths. Depending on individual preferences and clinical goals, sessions may incorporate Music Therapy, Art Therapy, or play-based psychotherapy modalities to support self-expression, communication, emotional regulation, and overall healing.

What conditions or challenges can creative arts therapies treat?

Our multidisciplinary team supports clients experiencing a wide range of emotional, behavioural, and developmental challenges, including anxiety, depression, trauma, emotional regulation difficulties, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), communication delays, grief, and self-esteem issues.

What age groups do you serve in play, art, and music therapy?

We work with children, youth, teens, and young adults across Whitby and the broader Durham Region. Our play-based psychotherapy is tailored for young children, while art and music therapy modalities are customized to engage older children, teens, and adults according to their developmental stage and personal goals.

Is therapy covered by insurance or funding programs?

Many extended health benefit packages cover creative arts therapies and psychotherapy (e.g., services provided by a Registered Psychotherapist [RP] or Registered Art/Music/Play Therapist). Additionally, certain developmental, community, or government funding programs (such as OAP) may cover these services. We recommend checking with your insurance provider or funding coordinator to confirm your coverage details.

Do I need to bring my own instruments or art supplies?

No, all necessary musical instruments, art supplies, and play therapy tools are fully provided at our Whitby clinic. If a client has specific personal instruments or preferred creative materials they wish to bring, they are always welcome to do so.

Where are sessions located, and do you offer virtual sessions?

In-person sessions take place at our centre located at 202 South Blair St, Unit #10, Whitby, ON, L1N 8X9 (conveniently serving Whitby, Oshawa, Clarington, Ajax, Pickering, and the Durham Region). We also offer virtual telehealth options where clinically appropriate.

Is artistic or musical training required?

No, prior background or training in art, music, or drama is not required. Our therapists provide all materials, instruments, and creative invitations, facilitating accessible ways to explore and participate regardless of skill level or experience.
